1st Annual "Rally at the Strip" Coming June 4-7

English Mountain Dragstrip in Newport will be the location for a new, three-and-a-half-day motorcycle rally, the "Rally at the Strip." Event organizer Glen Almany, who was raised on the property next to the drag strip, has dreamed for years of putting on such an event, and has been working on this one for over two years.

"I've traveled to different motorcycle events for years, and I've always thought that I could put one on that is bigger, better, and different from the others," says Almany. "I understand what people enjoy when they come to a rally, and that's what we are going to have. Good entertainment, and lots of quality vendors."

One very unique feature at the rally—which no other rally in this area has ever had—is the opportunity for participants to make timed runs on their own motorcycle on the dragstrip. Anyone whose bike and gear passes the safety inspection can race their buddy, or just make a pass on their own. "No other rally has a drag strip to use, plus we have a vendor who is bringing in a $75,000 dyno machine so people can see what horsepower their bike actually puts out," Almany says.

Another unheard-of attraction is the 3,900 square foot, drive-thru biker pub that will feature food, beverages, and live music. Outside entertainment includes a burn-out contest that will pay cash prizes, as well as different biker games throughout the three and a half days.

The bands that will be playing at the rally have all been hand selected. "We're not just letting any band come in and play," Almany says. "Several groups approached me about playing, but I didn't want to book anyone who I hadn't heard. I knew the type and quality of music I wanted, Southern rock and rhythm and blues. All of the bands are coming from out of state, so they will be fresh to everyone. We will have a battle of the bands on Thursday and Friday, and the winner will open on Saturday night for the feature band, Geneva."

There is camping available on site, and for those who don't camp there are hotels close by. The price of admission is only $35 for the full three days, and the gates will be open 24 hours a day during the rally. On-site security is provided. Mr. Almany stressed that this isn't a one-time deal: "We intend for this to be a premier event for the area for years to come."
