Do you mix in a little ’80s hair metal in with your ’90s indie rock? Have a bunch of cryptic stories about when you used to hang out with Superdrag, way back before they ever got famous? Chances are that you’d not only love The Funhouse, but that you are either Derek Senter or Rob Levering, the hosts of the show, which airs for two hours on Friday nights on the University of Tennessee’s WUTK 90.3 FM.

Just know that the loyal citizens of the WBIR signal range are obliged to kill and eat anyone who dares blaspheme the name of our beloved anchor. Robin is a treasure as rare as a pink diamond mined from the center of the earth, and just as strong. Yet she is as soft and tender as a Tennessee dogwood petal gracefully tumbling from its branch on the most beautiful spring morning in the history of the world.

The zany morning traffic guy’s desk is cluttered to the point of overflowing with clever, eye-catching knick-knacks. It’s a collection that never seems to diminish, new things piled on top of, rather than replacing, the old. Likewise, WBIR itself is a collection of clever promos, features, and rhyming sub-brands that seems to be growing all the time.

But the club hasn’t needed any help becoming a destination of its own, with concerts by N.E.R.D., Donna the Buffalo, The Misfits, and Girl Talk bringing hundreds of people down to the weird little industrial area between Western Avenue and Interstate 275. The Valarium’s provided a raucous alternative to downtown theaters and the cavernous concrete abyss of the Knoxville Coliseum. And with Voodoo on Saturdays, The Valarium has rejuvenated Knoxville’s dance scene.

It’s the kind of eclectic, hard-to-describe music that’s Southern in the best ways.

That was just in time for us to latch onto the success of their album Nothing Is Okay, a collection of haunting folk-rock songs built around Andrews’ and Quinn’s sweet, sweet harmonies. The pair are both pursuing solo projects right now, but they keep promising on their website that news about a new album is coming soon.

We say not! Last year, bloggers went into copy-and-paste overdrive, endlessly repeating the same headlines: “Johnny Knoxville’s Testicle Trauma,” “Johnny Knoxville Nearly Loses Testicles,” and “Knoxville Takes the Testicle Punishment Too Far” were among the most popular.

Her long, angular flapper-like figures, populating a fantastic, vaguely Art Deco/Symbolist space, are iconic images around Knoxville, in living rooms, galleries, and on a few select walls around downtown. In recent years Markert’s reach has expanded to Target, where prints of her original multimedia-on-wood paintings are now available all over the country.
