With the Tennessee Shines name already resurrected for WDVX’s weekly series of Monday night concert broadcasts, the popular roots/Americana radio station had to find another name for its new schedule of quarterly performances at the Bijou Theatre. The new name’s not quite as catchy, but it seems plenty descriptive: the WDVX World-Class Bluegrass Show.
The first installment of the series, sponsored by WDVX and the Knoxville Americana Music Foundation, is headlined by rising Western North Carolina bluegrass stars Balsam Range, who won the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Song of the Year award in 2011 for “Trains I Missed.” Balsam Range will be joined by local bluegrass traditionalists Brand New Strings and the long-running East Tennessee bluegrass band the Dismembered Tennesseans.
