The Heartless Bastards are a hard-luck band. Formed in 2003 by singer/guitarist Erika Wennerstrom, the Heartless Bastards have endured lineup changes, a move from their original home base in Cincinnati to Texas, a label switch, and a shift in style from straight-up modern rock to a mix of country, folk, psychedelia, and classic rock. But the long and winding road paid off in 2012 when the band released its fourth and best album, Arrow, which builds on the success of the Bastards’ 2009 breakthrough, The Mountain, with even more mature songwriting and a wider sonic palette. Wennerstrom, who changes backing band members with each album, displays both confidence and vulnerability on Arrow, and shows herself to be in total command of her material, which hits the sweet spot between Crazy Horse, the Rolling Stones’ early-’70s output, and Low.
