Your comments concerning Hull and the UN may lend support to a view I heard back in the 60's circulating in the UT History Department, spoken by historians, that Gatlinburg was the first choice for the UN headquarters. The notion was dropped when the need for an airport to handle jet aircraft became apparent. I suppose they could have used that long, flat, narrow area that became the strip of Pigeon Forgeā¦.
For some reason there has been long-standing investments by foreigners in businesses in Gatlinburg. Regardless of who owns it, there is a 'Swiss Village' up there. Foreign investments there may be coincidental, along with the emphasis on education found in that neck of the woods. But if the early initiative to locate the UN in a Geneva-like setting is true, it might indicate that the idea circulated long enough to draw international attention.
