There is a food that I consider to a Knoxville favorite... the steamed sandwich! I have tried to find these now that I live in Atlanta and there isn't anything like what they have at Gus's or Sam & Andy's. When I tell people about it they think that I am lying or tell my to try firehouse subs, which isnt the same. Also, I consider Petro's to be a Knoxville food. I will walk from any corner of Neyland stadium that I am in (which can be a task with the small concorses) to get a Petro on gameday.
Reuben's Deli on Broad St in the Fairlie Poplar neighborhood has some pretty great sandwiches you should try out. As for the steamed sandwiches you can go to Firehouse Subs to find something comparable to Gus's or Sam and Andy's in my opinion (perhaps my past experience with these is demonstrative of the lack of outstanding fare in recent years not quite like it used to be).
And as for Jack's mention of the Varsity- I find it a far cry from the staple of Atlanta cuisine. It's mostly a tourist-haven for the experience and not for the food. 90% of the cars are from out of the state if one paid attention.
