Mr. Lyons: Though "traffic projections are what they are" I believe we are in a position to challenge them precisely because TDOT's projections for Chapman Highway have been so grossly overprojected for more than 20 years now.
It is my hope that we in the city can organize to bring the inevitable Henley re-design to a fruitful conclusion. I took exception to many things written in this article, particularly that the bridge is not used much for walking. When the hospital was open, it was used quite a lot for walking. Given the development plans for the south bank of the river, I believe that providing good walking and biking opportunities across the river on Henley are crucial. Even more so, if the planned park lands acquisitions on Chapman Ridge are successful.
We have an opportunity here to create something extraordinary in medium-sized US cities and provide an enormous boost to quality of life for our citizens. It would be a shame to just fold and let TDOT roll over us. Since the governor's race is nearing, we should make this a campaign issue. TDOT "reform" is not yet complete and a given way of life. I fear, once Bredesen is gone, they will revert completely back to their old, arrogant ways.
