Thanks for a great story. We absolutely need for people to recognize the loss to our heritage and our PRODUCING agricultural infrastructure, not to mention our culture and economy.
Thanks also for pointing out that our County Mayor refuses to acknowledge his skulduggery. Don't feel slighted; he hands everyone, including constituents, off to the Chamber. His duplicity in both written and spoken comments to county officials and citizens is absolutely unforgivable. At least from the Chamber you get a consistent response: They want the intermodal so badly that Don Cason even implored God Almighty to sway the minds of those who disagreed with Norfolk-Southern's proposal during a public meeting.
You left out one very critical point, however: The New Market Elementary School butts right up against the proposed facility. The day-to-day danger to 400 or so students, plus their parents, educators, and others, is inconceivable.
You also needed to mention that many people who live north of 11-E would have to drive directly through a spill cloud if they ever have to evacuate, because there is no other way out. The risk may be small, but it's still there. If a deadly chemical gas escapes toward the School, for instance, all students and personnel would likely perish.
We're not against intermodal as a concept. We just don't want the reality of it in our community.
