Well, I can't vouch for what the other 2500 or so people at the Tea Party did during the Bush years, but I was running PorkBusters, an anti-pork campaign that targeted wasteful spenders in Congress, and in particular Republican Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott. But Bush's deficits were declining from 2004 on, and were a fourth of what Obama is proposing, as can be seen in this chart:
At any rate, big payouts to auto companies and bankers don't look like helping the sick and poor to me. In fact, the debt involved will sharply constrain benefits paid to the sick and the poor and the elderly in future years.
