Runners Up: WDVX 102.9, WIVK 107.7, WYLV 89.1
The success of WUTK is what "underdogs finish first" movies are made of. Run completely by students (I should know, since I'm the local music director!) under the guidance of general manager and local man-about-town Benny Smith, WUTK operates under a strict nonprofit status and depends on donations and underwriting from local businesses and listeners in order to stay on the air. In the days before it adopted its nickname of "The Rock," WUTK was known as "New Rock 90" and came perilously close to losing its transmission altogether. But in 2005, when the university stepped in and hired Smith, a former WUTK deejay himself, to turn things around, 90.3 became one of the best-run college radio stations in the country, earning honors from numerous media outlets, including CMJ. Today, WUTK plays a mix of of-the-moment independent artists, as well as local and classic acts, making it one of the most diverse stations on the air.
