it’s no exaggeration to say there’s no other band in town quite like Deek Hoi. Crafting a sort of Appalachian chamber pop music, the group combines traditional instruments such as banjos, dobros, and harmonicas with glockenspiels, melodicas, and synths to fashion catchy, quirky pop tunes and moving folk ballads, including an ambient-drenched version of old-time standard “Barbara Allen.” The reach is ambitious but well within the grasp of the players, best exemplified on the 2007 release The Golden Country.
