Local CD Review: Mallory

The three members of Mallory carve out five bouncy anthems on their debut recording, landing squarely in the middle between power trio (the bracing "America") and power pop (opening track "Make You Mine" and the bittersweet "Afraid of Living"). Traces of the band's influences, from Plain White T's to My Chemical Romance, surface now and then, but Mallory's straightforward working-class approach mutes most of that. Also muted is the band's Christianity, which comes through on the disc as a generally positive and life-affirming view of the world, rather than a sermon set to guitar, bass, and drum.
